چکیده
Understanding the Qur’anic surahs necessitates delving into their historical context—a
critical endeavor for accurate interpretation and grasping the divine message they convey. Imam
Maududi, in his renowned Tafsir work Tafheem Al Quran, meticulously examines this context at
the outset of each Qur’anic surah. His purpose is twofold: to illuminate interpretive objectives and
to facilitate practical application of the Qur’an’s provisions in the contemporary reality. Imam
Maududi, renowned for his eloquent literary style, pursued multifaceted objectives in his
interpretation of the Qur’an. These goals encompass: differentiating between Meccan and Medinan
Surahs, understanding Axes and Purposes of Surah, preferring the best reason, when discrepancies
arose regarding the reasons for revelation, and tracing the Stages of Islamic Dawah that it has gone
through, and addressing questions and responding to queries that naturally arise during Qur’anic
study. Imam Maududi, known for his eloquent literary style, did not rigidly adhere to a specific
method when explaining the historical background of Qur’anic surahs. Instead, he intentionally
diversified his style and expression. This diversity served both literary purposes and the fulfillment
of the surah’s objectives and content. At times, Imam Maududi succinctly summarized the historical
context, while in other instances, he provided detailed elaborations. He skillfully related the surah’s
content to the historical reality, sometimes explicitly mentioning it as the “historical background,”
and at other times, subtly alluding to it under different titles. Through this nuanced approach,
Imam Maududi enriched our understanding of the Qur’an’s timeless message. In the realm of
Qur’anic commentary, both ancient and contemporary scholars have predominantly focused on the
reasons behind the revelation of specific verses. These reasons often stem from partial events or
individual inquiries that prompted the revelation of a particular verse or surah. However, alongside
these specific reasons lies the broader historical context—the backdrop against which the Qur’anic
surah engages. This historical background encompasses the general milieu within which the surah’s
provisions and directives unfold. By considering both the specific and the general, interpreters
deepen their understanding of the divine message.
